Leadership Tools for the Dance Leader
Dr. Arnel Calvario Ripkens continues to teach his international leadership development program LEADERSHIP TOOLS for the DANCE LEADER (which has served over 300 dance leaders globally) virtually and in-person.
Program Description:
Leadership Tools for the Dance Leader is a leadership experience dedicated to cultivating a safe, supportive, affirming, and inclusive space where veteran and aspiring dance leaders alike can connect, share, and gain tools for mission/vision development, effective communication, navigating group dynamics, dance history/heritage appreciation, and self-care. It is the hope that these tools will support participating leaders in fostering safety, liberation, equity, meaningful growth, and compassionate care for themselves and all they serve.

Session 1
Tools for Developing your Mission & Vision

Participants will discuss, solidify, and affirm their identity and/or the unique identity of the organization they lead

Participants will discuss the importance of a Mission Statement & strategies to write one.

Participants will discuss the importance of developing a Vision Statement & strategies to write one.

Participants will be guided on drafting their own Personal Mission Statement
Session 2
Tools for Effective Communication

Participants will discuss tools for enhancing your verbal & nonverbal communication skill

Participants will explore what combination of Learning Styles works for who you serve and for your own learning

Participants will discuss tools for strong active listening with understanding as the goal.

Participants will discuss the importance of communicating boundaries well

Participants will discuss ideas for implementing effective communication systems in your organization

Participants will learn tools for developing effective Policies AND Procedures
Session 3
Tools for Managing Group Dynamics

Participants will learn tools for cultivating an environment of SAFETY, EQUITY, & INCLUSIVITY

Participants will discuss Privilege & Intersectionality

Participants will discuss the importance of acknowledging and working through power dynamics

Participants will learn tools for knowing the members of your organization better

Participants will learn tools for working through challenges & resolving conflict in your organization

Participants will discuss the powerful impact of positive reinforcement & learn tools to use it effectively for their organization’s ecosystem

Participants will discuss “Roles in a Social Change Ecosystem”
Session 4
Roots B4 Branches

HISTORY & HERITAGE of many dance art forms we participate in today

Participants will discuss what social movements are connected to these dance art forms

Participants will discuss pathways to appreciation vs. appropriation

Participants will explore how we can implement social justice, transformative change efforts, & education into our art, education, & organizations

Each leader will receive a 21-page Dance Time-line Handout
-
Participants will learn dance foundation of two of the dance art forms discussed.
Session 5
TOOLS for CULTIVATING SUSTAINABILITY and SELF-CARE as Leaders

Participants will connect with ALUMNI leaders from Leadership Tools for the Dance Leaders via this Zoom session via Large Group Discussion as well as Small Breakout Room Discussions

Participants will discuss tools for building longevity in your field(s)

Participants will discuss tools for taking care of yourself, so you can take care of others
-
Participants will revisit the importance of healthy boundaries
-
Participants will discuss tools for developing & implementing self-care systems into your way of life

Participants will discuss Self-Care Accountability

Participants will discuss ideas for implementing self-care systems into your organization for those you serve
